Robert Cray’s remarkable 50-year career has solidified his place as one of American music’s most singular artists. Born in Georgia and raised in Washington, Cray first picked up the guitar after seeing The Beatles on TV and witnessing Jimi Hendrix perform in Seattle. From garage band beginnings to sharing stages with legends like B.B. King, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, Cray’s journey has been one of perseverance and passion.
A five-time Grammy winner and Blues Hall of Fame inductee, Cray’s music blends blues, soul, and rock with integrity and intensity. His breakthrough 1986 album, Strong Persuader, made him the first blues artist to break into the MTV era, earning global acclaim and inspiring a resurgence in the genre. Over the decades, Cray has collaborated with icons like Tina Turner, Chuck Berry, and John Lee Hooker, while crafting a distinctive sound marked by his soulful voice and stinging guitar work.
Recent albums, including That’s What I Heard (2020), showcase Cray’s evolving artistry, combining deeply felt songs of love, loss, and social commentary with his signature groove. With 19 studio albums and countless accolades, Cray remains a tireless performer, delivering music that is unmistakably his own. “All these years, we’ve been fortunate to do what we love,” he reflects. “I couldn’t ask for anything more.”
