The Agency… – release cinematic indie-rock single ‘Past Promise’

Past Promise is the second release from The Agency… this year,  following hot on the heels of ‘We Fell to the Floor’. Driven by the intimate and searching vocal of Steven K Driver, it’s the third single from their forthcoming album ‘Love & Obey’ exploring themes of authenticity, conviction, and holding your ground in an increasingly demanding and distracted world.

There’s a moment in Past Promise where intimacy gives way to something more guarded-if not confrontational-where what once felt immediate and certain begins to shift, leaving a sense of ambiguity. The track opens in a restrained, romantic register, expanding into something heavier, underpinned by distorted guitars, as Driver’s lyrics and performance move from the introspective to the urgent. Past Promise traces the erosion of clarity-within relationships and within the self.

“Past Promise isn’t the relationship song a casual listener might expect-it’s not soap opera material. The themes lean toward the transcendental; the characters, like Mary and the narrator, could be real or symbolic. The song is really about protecting a sense of self in a world driven by noise, influence, and expectation. Beneath that, there’s something more genuine—the idea that you can still love with openness and innocence, whatever influencers, politicos or your social media might suggest.”

Part of the forthcoming album Love & Obey, the track sits within a broader exploration of connection under pressure-where love, control, and identity overlap, and where something more instinctive or spiritual is often just out of reach beneath the surface of modern life. Past Promise was produced by Malcolm Jackson and features the talents of Jade Emerson on vocals. The Agency… will be playing a series of Spring dates across the UK.

The Agency…is an alt/indie rock collective renowned for their ability to captivate listeners with haunting melodies, introspective lyrics, and cinematic soundscapes. Since their inception, they have distinguished themselves with a unique blend of indie rock, post-rock, and folk elements, crafting musical experiences that transport audiences to eerie, otherworldly realms. Their previous releases, Of Ghosts and In the Haunted Woods, illustrate the band’s fearless exploration of the supernatural, emotional depth, and the human condition. With a penchant for weaving dark tales through dystopian soundscapes, The Agency… continues to push the boundaries of their genre, creating evocative and immersive music that resonates on a profound level.
