Sunday (1994) – reopen the doors to ‘Devotion (Deluxe)’ concluding impressive 18-Track EP Era

Indie faves Sunday (1994) re-open the portal to their world of Devotion today with a special deluxe edition of their standout sophomore EP. Devotion (Deluxe) dives deeper into the trio’s dreamlike storytelling, offering a fuller portrait of a band refining their voice in real time. The release comes fresh off the heels of an extensive period of touring, having just concluded a 17-date run supporting The Last Dinner Party across Europe.

An immersive continuation of their cinematic, yet confessional soundscape, Devotion (Deluxe) adds three brand-new songs to the original track listing, a vivid extension of the world they’ve so masterfully built. Each track also comes with a dreamy visualiser. At the same time, the release sees the band conclude their EP era, bringing their pre-debut album catalogue to a remarkable 18 tracks – a uniquely impressive feat.

“Roll up, roll up, Devotion (Deluxe) is finally here. Three brand new songs and the final chapter in the Devotion saga. Written on the road in London, the Cotswolds in rural England and at home in California, and all recorded in our one bedroom apartment. This is us at our most personal. And now it’s yours. You’re born alone, you die alone and in between we’ll see you at The Fairground” – Sunday (1994)

Lead single ‘Shame’ sees the band return with dreamy, childlike wonder. Laced with twangy guitar, there’s sonic nods to the 90s shimmer of The Cranberries and the melancholic glow of The Cure. Written after watching Heavenly Creatures (1994), the track draws inspiration from the film’s unsettling portrait of devotion and delusion. “When two heavenly creatures are forced apart by small-minded preachers, one takes matters into her own hands. Because sometimes life itself is sick in the head.” – Sunday (1994).

Elsewhere, ‘Darling, I’ve Done This Dance Before’ was written after touring with younger crew – “their debriefs about boy trouble stirring flashbacks to the messy, tender chaos of my own life before I met Lee”, comments Paige, referring to her bandmate and partner. The track unfolds like a late-night reverie, sharpening their gift for storytelling rooted in introspection and human experience.

Closing the project, ethereal, lo-fi offering ‘The Fairground’ retreats to the band’s bare essentials – hushed vocals, gauzy textures and unvarnished melody, with harmonies that feel timeless. Beneath its soft-focus surface, though, it reaches for something far bigger: a reflection on navigating the dizzying carousel of the music industry, written after seeing Oasis play their comeback tour.
