Matt Edible & The Obtuse Angels to release evocative single ‘Triage’ on Fri 13th

Matt Edible has been a jewel in the (admittedly fairly republican) crown of Hull’s music scene for many years.  From fronting cult avant-pop heroes Edible 5ft Smiths to leading Tom Robinson (6music) favourites The Holy Orders, he has consistently produced memorable and captivating music.  

Matt Edible & The Obtuse Angels feels like where all of this has been leading.  

Building up to the release of sophomore album ‘The Optometrist’ (available 14th February, 2025) after making appearances at Truck Festival and Humber Street Sesh this summer, Matt Edible & The Obtuse Angles release the mesmerisingly evocative new single ‘Triage’. Drenched in stunning layered guitars providing solace to anguished vocals, ‘Triage’ is a fête of emotion captured beautifully within an all encompassing soundscape. 
 

“Triage is a tender, Lynchian dream of a song. It begins by telling a confused story of loneliness and despair against wandering arpeggiated guitars. I’ve always wanted to produce something that might be considered as “soulful” and I definitely think that’s the mood of this song. Of course, its never quite that straightforward with my songwriting and it takes in some pretty weird imagery but I think it all just about makes sense by the end. Plus I got to layer those big saxophones on there.

Matt Edible & The Obtuse Angles‘ debut album Stairgazing (2018) featured the lush production and multi-instrumentation of Joe Bennett (Goldrush/St. Etienne), the drumming skills of Mike Monaghan (Gaz Coombes/Willie J Healey) and contained a wide variety of material ranging from the sublime, swooping, sweary love song Astronauts to the anthemic indie earworm Nightclubbing.  It also showcased a love of a wide range of styles from Post-rock to Americana leading the American alt-legend Josh T. Pearson to proclaim “The best thing out of Hull since the Humber Bridge!” 
 

When Covid hit, Matt locked down at home to record the follow-up album – The Optometrist.  Alongside new additions John Andrew (Kingmaker) -drums, and Sarah Shiels -bass, Matt has produced a thrilling new collection of material ranging from the first singles, glam rock stomper Mirror shoes and phone intellectual bating Idiot to the new more soulful single Triage and beyond.  
 

With 2 more singles scheduled after Triage followed by the release of the second album, The Optometrist, on 14th February 2025, catch Matt Edible & The Obtuse Angles live opening for The Bug Club at the Hull Adelphi on 31st August, on their local BBC Introducing show in York & Humberside scheduled for 12th September, and headlining Trinity Live in Hull on Thursday 19th September.
