In double denim and his signature shades, Leon Bridges stepped onstage as a man who knew exactly who he was and what he was there to do. There was something about the light Summer rain that complimented the gentle soul sound that he’s known so well for. As the natural light dipped on the gardens, the golden glow of Bridges’ Western world took us captive. The Khruangbin collaborations of ‘Texas Sun’ and ‘Mariella’ went down a treat in particular on the night.
Opening the evening was Leeds-based soul outfit Gotts Street Park, whose dusty instrumentals and understated swagger were a perfect match for Bridges’ aesthetic. Their cinematic grooves set the tone for what was to come.
