Kierst today shares new single‘Southern Star’ via Sad ClubRecords. It arrives as the first new music from Kierst since the acclaimed Thud EP, which also came out on Sad Club. Initially from Columbia, South Carolina, Kierst is now based in Brooklyn. She has found champions inThe Line Of Best Fit, Clash, Rough Trade, CRACK,Beats Per Minute,Secret Meeting & Lauren Laverne and Steve Lamaq at BBC 6Music, with her track ‘How to Be’ from Thud set to appear on Disney+ show Extraordinary.
Her latest track ‘Southern Star’ was actually written around the same time as the Thud EP; it existed as a stripped-down demo on Bandcamp for three years before it ever really took shape. Once the band got together in 2022, they began playing it live, with it coming to life when newly recorded with Jonathan Schenke (Parquet Courts, Snail Mail) at Ridgewood Queens’ Living Rooms Studio this past January. The song is dreamlike, following lush arrangements, with Kierst’s haunting vocals dictating above all else.
On the new single, Kierst says: “I wrote this a long time ago when I was really heartbroken, there’s no other way to put it. But years have gone by and the song has gone through countless versions and been transformed by people I hold dear – and in that way, it means so much more to me now than ever before.“
