Irish indie artist The Butterfly Graveyard – delivers a tale of star crossed lovers escaping to the metropolis via new single ‘Big City’

Irish indie artist The Butterfly Graveyard is located somewhere between The Blue Nile, Jeff Buckley and the deep blue sea. He makes a fragile music, soft as a butterfly’s wing but sometimes rough and uneven like the underbelly of a leaf, translucent when held up under the light. Having released a series of well received singles over the last couple of years the Cork based artist returns with a tale of indie romance ‘Big City‘ on Thurs 23rd July.

‘Sonically, if I was to attempt to visualise a mental image for this track, it would be the thought of David Bowie, Brian Eno and Iggy Pop driving around LA in a stolen car. They are being chased by the cops and obviously Iggy Pop is driving. I’m pretty sure Brian Ferry is in there too somewhere smoking a Gitane and driving his C4 corvette looking uber cool.
Lyrically it is an age old tale of two star crossed lovers who leave their small town and escape to the Big City to follow their dreams. I suppose the track is in the tradition of Tracey Chapman’s ‘Fast Car’, two young people feeling trapped by their situation and dreaming of a new and better life.
I’ve always been fascinated with the move from the rural backwater to the metropolis, it’s the sense of anonymity and where the possibilities are endless.
As for our two star crossed lovers, they probably end up becoming bank robbers and go out in a blaze of glory like Bonny and Clyde.’
