Dutch Criminal Record are a south coast indie surf band from Chichester, UK. Their sound is a guitar driven blend of 60’s pop vocals, interlinking riffs and blooming harmonies. Their summery and upbeat sound is often overlaid with vocals detailing existential anxieties and daily dread. This mix has cultivated a loyal fanbase, seeing the band selling out 2 U.K. tours as well as support bands such as Sea Girls, Sports Team and Goodkid on their tours.
Poised to release their gorgeous debut album ‘Novium’ (the Latin translation of their home town of Chichester) via AntiFragile Records on Friday 23rd August, and following the success of previous single ‘Baby Blue’ (havinglanded on New Music Friday, Front Page Indie, All New Indie & Indie Chillout Spotify editorial playlists), DCR are set to release ‘Lost and Found‘ on Friday 23rd August, the fourth single taken from their anticipated debut album.
“Lost and Found actually came out of a research project I (Sam) did for my undergraduate degree at the University of Sussex. I was experimenting with varispeed in light of the sped up songs TikTok craze and decided it would be interesting to try and make a song where all the individual tracks were recorded at different tape speeds. The final result we all really liked so we decided to head into the studio and re record it for the album. There’s lots of really unique sounds like the guitar solo in the middle (that would be impossible to play otherwise) that are all created using varispeed. Lyrically it’s about finally being happy with where you’re at in life after being quite unhappy about it for sometime hence the idea of being lost then found. The vocals are all slightly sped up too giving it an interesting timbral quality!”
‘Novium’ represents a culmination of all that the band have achieved up until this point and an opportunity to reflect on their roots and admire the growth. Known for their infectious melodies, glossy guitar chords and vibrant live energy, DCR offer a sun-soaked debut album that blends nostalgic indie surf vibes with a psychedelic, Gen Z twist. The DCR boys conceived the album as a love letter to themselves and we invite you to join in on the romance.
‘Novium’ manages to embody heart-melting moments of indie pop and glorious crescendos of shoegaze-y rock, taking the listener through a sonic journey through the highs and lows of growing up, affection and self-appreciation. Jam-packed full of tunes designed to crank the volume up and roll the car window down, ‘Novium’ is an irresistibly catchy coming-of-age album, shining with captivating energy that Dutch Criminal Record are proud to share after years of hard graft.
The album follows DCR’s ‘Apathy Mixtape’ EP last year and fans will be able to shuffle their ‘Socks and Sandals’ to old classics and sing at the top of their lungs to new favourites along with the band when DCR tour the UK and EU at the beginning of 2025 (still TBA).
