Foy Vance brought The Wake World Tour to a full 3Olympia, and he didn’t come alone. Before he took the stage, two friends and regular collaborators set the tone for a night built on songs and the stories behind them.
Bonnie Bishop opened, bringing the Texas soul. She spoke about her stepfather, a college football coach, and how working alongside him gave her big dreams growing up. “Synesthesia” and “Sweet Magnolia” featured, but it was “Happiness Under the Sun” that drew the biggest reaction of her set. She closed with “Thief.” Foy brought her back to the stage later in the evening as his backing vocalist.
Niall McCabe followed, giving the early gig-goers a short introduction to each of his songs. He credited Foy with saving him during the pandemic by getting him writing again, then played the first song to come out of that time, a full-circle moment. “November Swell,” from his album Rituals, followed, but the standout was “Diamond,” a song he played at his very first gig and then left behind. When his sister got married recently, she asked him to relearn it for the wedding, and now he’s thinking of recording it. He closed with another unrecorded song without giving its name, so there’s plenty to keep an ear out for if you’re a fan.
Early in his set, Vance told the 3Olympia he wasn’t going to say much. He never likes how it comes out, he explained, and the setlist was too big anyway. On a night where both support acts built their sets around stories, the headliner left his to the songs. The set spanned his catalogue, from “Joy of Nothing,” “She Burns” and “Sapling” to “We Almost Made It,” “Hi, I’m the Preacher’s Son” and “Call Me Anytime,” before closing on “Guiding Light.”
