The buzz around rising alt-pop artist EMMMA has led to comparisons with Chappell Roan, Holly Humberstone and Phoebe Bridgers. And with big-hearted hooks, resonant emotions and classic songwriting expressed through an electro-pop filter you can see why. Today sees EMMA taking a fresh step towards the release of her second EP by unveiling the new single ‘Burning Bridges’.
Dark, arpeggiated synths provide the mood-setting texture to contrast EMMMA’s sweetly lilting voice as she dares to go introspective and self-critical. The song’s chorus steps up the gear with a propulsive energy that reflects “the high of running away” from your problems. But ‘Burning Bridges’ isn’t a song of self-pity, it’s about self-learning. Sometimes you have to own your mistakes and gain from the experience. And at other moments burning bridges with people is the only thing you can do to move on.
EMMMA says, “I’ve definitely been convinced that everything going wrong in my life is my fault, and asked whether it’d be different if I hadn’t made such a hard and fast decision. But over the years, I’ve come to realise that it’s actually OK to burn a few bridges – it can be a way of healing.”
EMMMA wrote the song with its producer and her regular collaborator Ben Wylen as well as Andrea Rosario (LAUV, Natalie Jane)
Change has become a recurring motif of EMMMA’s songwriting. Her debut EP ‘Secondary Character’ was full of experiences of self-discovery and renewed confidence: taking a bold gamble rather than the safe option; standing up for herself when it would be easier to back down; and letting others have the spotlight when she has everything it takes to command centre-stage.
Her recent singles ‘Cut The Breaks’, ‘Wednesday’s Child’ and now ‘Burning Bridges’ explore change from a different angle ahead of her upcoming second EP. This time it’s about realising that running away is nothing more than a quick fix. Taking the longer road of examining your issues, coming to terms with them, and finding cathartic relief in expressing them is the harder but more rewarding approach.
Originally from Westport, Connecticut, EMMMA has been making headway in the UK with a first wave of tastemaker attention. She recently toured here as special guest to JC Stewart.
