Emerging avant-pop artist and multi-instrumentalist, Maddie Ashman, releases her debut single Toffee, out now on AWAL.
Known for her microtonal experimentalism and award-winning audiovisual installations, Ashman’s dynamic, self-produced debut single Toffee collides mellotrons, crashing drums and glitched-out cello solos together with her dreamlike falsetto to create something otherworldly and refreshingly unique.
Speaking about the new single, Maddie explains “I wanted to capture what it’s like to feel again and embrace emotions after a long time of suppressing them. The chord sequence was deliberately constructed to create a feeling of being constantly pulled in both directions – almost relentlessly ungrounded, yet also as if nothing is wrong. It’s totally exciting, confusing, empowering and overwhelming.”
Maddie has already accumulated a strong following on social media where she has become known for her microtonal performances, seeing her garner over 100,000 new instagram followers in less than three months including praise from the likes of Anthony Fantano (aka The Needle Drop), Caroline Polachek, Jacob Collier, Ólafur Arnalds, Sampha and more.
Following her recent sold out headline show at London’s Paper Dress Vintage and The Great Escape, Maddie will be supporting Sungazer on their forthcoming UK tour as well as sets at festivals such as How The Light Gets in, Klaeng, Left of The Dial and more.
