Dominic Fike’s 2018 track ‘Babydoll’ has unexpectedly shot back into the Top 20 of the UK Official Singles Chart after becoming a major TikTok trend, with 690K creations on the platform already. Now he shares a brand new official video for ‘Babydoll’ as the song approaches a billion streams on Spotify alone.
The ‘Babydoll’ video reflects the intimacy that people have come to love the song for. It’s simple but compelling, as Dominic performs the song in his car as it passes through a car wash. It also presents something new, with an impromptu a capella addition to the end of the song.
Dominic also shared the following story behind ‘Babydoll’:
“8 years ago I made a tape in Florida in a room a friend let me live in while I was on house arrest. I didn’t think about making the songs everyday, it was more like eating or something I’d do in between living. In front of me everyday was a black epiphone, my laptop and the window overlooking the parking lot to keep an eye out for my P.O.
Life at this time was fairly tumultuous and I felt like a heavy burden on everyone I interacted with, especially women. I just hated being poor so much. Looking back now, that time ends up meaning the most. Before algorithms, before other people’s words – even hearing from people I admire. Everything that comes after only makes it harder. So don’t think you’re missing something to chase what you want. It’s probably already there.
Thankful for everyone on this journey. Everyone listening to old songs and new. This one has only gotten more special to me.”
‘Babydoll’ originally featured on Dominic’s debut EP ‘Don’t Forget About Me, Demos’. He has subsequently released two acclaimed albums, ‘What Could Possibly Go Wrong?’ and ‘Sunburn’, as well as the ‘14 Minutes’ EP and last year’s ‘Rocket’ mixtape. He has also collaborated with a diverse array of artists including Denzel Curry, Paul McCartney, Zendaya, Justin Bieber and Halsey. He achieved further success in the acting world, playing Elliot in the second and third seasons of the HBO smash ‘Euphoria’.
Dominic Fike will play the Freely Fest in Nashville next month, ahead of a set at The Governors Ball in June. He will also tour as special guest to Tame Impala during their North American tour, playing all shows from August 25th onwards.
