Devin Townsend’s sold out first stop of his current tour at Dublin’s Ambassador Theatre on Saturday night was far from a typical heavy metal show. Rather than a full-band, wall-of-sound production, this leg of the Metamorphosis solo tour offered a stripped-back, storytelling-heavy setup. Part acoustic gig, part stand-up comedy, and part retrospective therapy session, the evening split the audience into two distinct camps: those expecting heavy riffs, and those mesmerized by an unfiltered look into one of progressive metal’s most unpredictable minds.
Taking the stage with just an acoustic guitar, a laptop and an ironing board (yup), Devin laid out the premise early: a step-by-step walk through his life, discography, and mental headspaces from album to album.
It was a conversational, intentionally rough-around-the-edges narrative where Devin paused between (and sometimes during) song snippets to offer candid context on how each record came to be, as well as the story behind the songs, the recording process, accidentally deleting sessions and living off of spaghetti and margarine.
The show contained stripped-down renditions of early material—including surprising nods to Punky Brüster and classic Strapping Young Lad cuts. Hearing songs usually backed by thick layers of production broken down to single acoustic chords emphasised just how strong his raw vocal technique is. True to form, the section felt wonderfully unpolished. Devin stopped mid-riff on occasion, forgot lyrics, joked about his lack of prep, and managed to reach as far as the Terria era before time constraints forced him to wrap up the chronology. Hopefully he can fit more in as the tour goes on as it was a genuinely interesting and honest insight into how a lot of his music came to be.
Following a short interval, the second half leaned a bit more into music, blending acoustic playing with backing tracks to flesh out the arrangements, focusing mainly on his new current release, ‘The Moth’, as well as rare, intimate performances of tracks from Life, Singularity, and teasers from newer projects like Powernerd.
Free from heavy amp noise and the music stripped back as far as it could go, his vocal range, dynamic control and opera-grade belting stole the show. I cannot emphasise enough how it felt to see him on stage alone, hitting notes you wouldn’t think possible for a human to hit and jumping between genres and styles like it was nothing. Even during the first half he would be telling a story and mid sentence switch into a song with the most exhilarating vocals, then suddenly stop and finish the sentence. I’ve never seen (or heard) a vocal performance like it.
If you came expecting to headbang to his extensive heavy back catalogue with a full wall of amplifiers, you likely felt out of place. But as a deep dive into three decades of songwriting and a truly interesting story of his life before and after he became a success, the Ambassador gig offered an intimate, hilarious, and emotionally honest masterclass from a master at work.
Not what I was expecting, but a gig I’ll genuinely be thinking about for a while.
