Cinder Well – announces release of ‘Small Prophets OST’ including demo version of “The Wise Man’s Song”

Following the success of the comedy drama TV show Small Prophets created, written and directed by Mackenzie Crook, and the release of the original theme song which came out as a single earlier this year, comes the release of the original score by Cinder Well (the musical project of Amelia Baker).

The soundtrack includes a demo version of “The Wise Man’s Song”, sharing Friday alongside another track from the OST “The Christmas Room” as pre-release singles. This demo version of the beloved original theme song was recorded on Amelia’s phone and sent to Mackenzie – “it was basically the first time I ever played it,” says Amelia.

The soundtrack also features playing from guest musicians, including Steve Roach on synths, who created the sound worlds for the homunculi, Mat Ball (BIG|BRAVE) on drums on the theme song and Greg Cohen (Tom Waits, John Zorn, David Byrne, Laurie Anderson) plays bass on the theme song and cues.

The OST will be available for the first time digitally via Bucks Records on 2nd October, with a vinyl release expected via Hen House Studios at the same time. The release also marks the first date in Cinder Well’s tour of the UK and Ireland.  

Reflecting on their work together Cinder Well (Amelia Baker) writes, “Mackenzie has such an empathy for the joys and sorrows of being a human, themes I also aim to highlight in my music. This led to a kindred-ness and understanding in our goal of creating feeling and made Small Prophets such a dream to work on. It was an honour to elevate Mackenzie’s beautiful story with music.”

Mackenzie Crook says, “Amelia’s music has been the soundtrack to my life for the past five years and I have no doubt that it seeped into the writing of Small Prophets and helped inspire the magical tone of the show. So it seemed only right to reach out to her when the time came to think about a score. What she created for us, the soundtrack and the hauntingly beautiful theme ‘The Wise Man’s Song’, lifted the series to another level.”
