Born in the Black Country FRIEDA STAR announce their arrival with this scintillating debut effort, jam-packed with fuzzy indie sensibilities, ‘Mothers and Sisters’ precedes the group’s debut headline show next week (February 7th @ Sunflower Lounge, Birmingham), with further new material and an extensive live set to be unveiled in the coming months.
Detailing their new offering, the band revealed: “‘Mothers and Sisters’ was inspired by an up-skirting incident involving Garran’s girlfriend, while returning home from Birmingham via the railway. Aggressively, and rightly so, Garran took his pen to paper to release frustrations and angst that his girlfriend fell victim to a complete stranger. As for many women across the world, these monstrous forms of misogyny are still present in modern society yet having been highlighted for decades. Hopefully, it demands the attention this injustice deserves.”
FRIEDA STAR (FFO Been Stellar, Cardinals, Gurriers, Westside Cowboy) lay foundations with Xavier Al-Naqib’s life-affirming basslines, medicinal in feel, opening doors and stretching the view, while James Knott’s sharp, intricate guitars carve the detail. Propelled by Scarlett Churchill’s textured, stylistic drumming, the sound leaves space for songwriter Garran Hickman to place his idiosyncratic lyrics, teasing out the final flavour.
FRIEDA STAR’s ‘Mothers and Sisters’ is out now and available on all digital platforms.
