Experimental Dingle/Cork-based band Pinhole share the news of their debut album Sweet Spot with their slow burn single ‘I Want Desire’ and a dazzling music video today. The album itself will be released on Friday, 11th October, 2024. The video, filmed by Principles of Film course students, captures the colourful, awe-inspiring landscapes of Dingle.
The song itself starts from a gentle place, with Ciara O’Flynn’s soft, honeyed voice luring us in, but there’s an uneasy tension just beneath the surface, fueled by steady yet feverish percussion. The song reaches its cathartic zenith as Ciara implores: “I want desire.”
Pinhole say of ‘I Want Desire’: “The song was written thinking about the role of desire and the sensual in life and how we need them to remain healthy and full of vitality. Our culture is so hell-bent in speeding us up. Speed and sensuousness are practically incompatible, so the song is essentially a resistance to hurrying up, instead asking us to slow down and tune into the body and our spirit—the things that really matter. Give yourself the time to truly see the people who matter to you, enjoy your food, listen to the sounds of life, and treasure the body.”
Composed of Ciara O’Flynn, Mark McLoughlin and other transitory musicians, Pinhole brandish the alternative flag but deliberately skate over genre boundaries, with the result that they stand alone in their unique sound. They have been likened to a reinvented Kate Bush, PJ Harvey, Bat for Lashes and Portishead, to name a few. Their singular artistry has been showcased on the celebrated Other Voices TV series.
At the outbreak of Covid Pinhole were on the verge of releasing their debut album, and their song ‘Better Than One’ was RTÉ single of the week. The subsequent album launch and Irish/UK tour were canceled.
Since then, Pinhole have made a triumphant return with their eerie single ‘Sweet Spot’, which is their track with the most radio impacts in Ireland to date. Pinhole were interviewed by RTÉ.ie, Entertainment.ie, Dublin City FM, and FM104 in the run-up to their recent shows at Cork’s Crane Lane and the legendary Whelans.
Pinhole’s first EP Between the Babies and the Birds was played extensively on 2FM, Today FM and Newstalk, and their music has been used in the RTÉ series Striking Out.
From delicate melodies to raw mayhem, Pinhole are ready to take you on a roller coaster journey of the senses.
