BRIARS RETURN WITH ENERGETIC INDIE-FOLK SINGLE, ‘QUALMS’
Cork City based alt-folk outfit BRIARS have returned with a new single entitled ‘Qualms’.
The bouzouki driven indie-folk song, released on July 5th, is the first release from the band in over a year, marking the start of their next phase, featuring more releases and live appearances in the coming months.
‘Qualms’ is the strongest representation of BRIARS’ core sound to date, a unique blend of the group’s traditional folk and alternative contemporary influences. The song evolves as it goes on, starting with a subtle bouzouki riff, which is then set in motion by driving drums, bass and keys. This is all completed by the addition of traditional Irish instruments (accordion, fiddle and flute), allowing the song to grow to what feels like an indie anthem, but with fresh unfamiliar textures and dynamics.
“It’s kind of a song about inevitability and being resigned to the idea that something is coming to an end, while still trying to hang onto it…” says Mick Grace, “…and realising you’ll never be fully done with it, whatever happens. It also takes a bit of a step back and lets you notice that this feeling, in a way, applies to each of our relationships with the world around us. Feeling like we don’t have long left, but it’s all we have. All that cherry stuff.”
“I think it’s a good way to deliver a heavy message like that though…”, adds Paul O’Shea, “…with a more energetic approach than you’d expect. It also gave us the chance to put across the feel of the live show more than we have in the past”.
Although BRIARS presents as a duo at its core, their 7 piece live show is what has gotten most attention, captivating festival audiences in Ireland this summer. The band has already appeared at When Next We Meet, Galway Folk Festival and Liverpool Irish Fest, with more festival dates booked and yet to be announced.
BRIARS will also perform with their full live lineup on Wednesday July 31st in legendary Cork City venue, The Roundy. Tickets are on sale now.
’Qualms’ is officially released across all platforms on Friday July 5th, with a music video following in the weeks after.
