A.S. Fanning – Shares New Single ‘On Your Side’ & Announces B-Sides EP ‘Unbearable Miracle’

Dublin-born, Berlin-based alternative artist A.S. Fanning has released new single ‘On Your Side’, with the announcement of a B-sides EP titled Unbearable Miracle, releasing Friday, September 19th.

A.S. Fanning is the moniker of singer-songwriter Stephen Fanning. Grounded in the German capital since 2013 following the disbandment of The Last Tycoons, Fanning has forged a distinct solo career, drawing comparisons to Leonard Cohen, Scott Walker and Nick Cave with his ability to transform unease into hauntingly beautiful soundscapes. At the intersection of alternative rock, folk and psychedelia, he blends acoustic intimacy with subtle electronic flourishes to create a sound that is both timeless yet distinctly his own.

His latest album, Take Me Back To Nowhere – a record shaped by disorientation, fracture, and a fascination with the unstable nature of reality – has earned extensive praise since its February release, including RTÉ Radio 1, CLASH, Backseat Mafia, Under The Radar, and God Is In The TV.

Upcoming EP Unbearable Miracle, releasing September 18th, will feature six alternative and remix versions of songs from the Take Me Back To Nowhere LP, alongside unheard material. Lead single ‘On Your Side’, was produced and mixed by Robbie Moore at Idea Farm, Sweden. On the song, Fanning says:

“‘On Your Side’ has always been a bit of its own standalone thing. It didn’t quite fit the last album, and it’s never been played live, so it occupies its own strange space. It centres around a feeling of anxiety, and how our brains have the ability to make us think that enemies are everywhere and conflict is everywhere. It’s sort of about the idea of a divided self. I remember my Dad saying that he always felt his body was on his side but he wasn’t sure if his mind was with him or against him. In this song, I think I’m saying to a person who’s having a battle against their mind that I’m in their corner, whoever that separate self might be.”

Featuring Fred Sunesen on drums and percussion, Felix Buchner on bass guitar, David Adams on synthesizers, Bernardo Sousa on guitars and tape loops and Robbie Moore on backing vocals, the song comes to light through a talented group of collaborators that feature across the upcoming EP.
